Friends and colleagues of IWU graduate Jennifer Longworth, who died last month in an explosion in Indianapolis with her husband John Dion Longworth, have come up with a couple of ways to pay tribute to the fallen couple.

The Indianapolis Star reports that teachers at Southwest Elementary Elementary in Greenwood, Indiana are knitting hats and scarves for the second grade children in Longworth’s classes, as she did every year that she taught at the school. They stay after hours to work on the project, and WIBC FM says that each of them will come in Colts blue, in honor of Longworth’s passionate love for her home NFL team.

Meanwhile, the owner of the Colts, Jim Irsay, has offered his own tribute: he kicked off donations to the new Southwest Elementary Jennifer and Dion Longworth Memorial Award, an $1000 gift to be bestowed each year to a graduating student of Greenwood High School seeking continuing education. For the first ten years, the award will go to former students of Longworth; afterwards, recipients will be chosen based on “criteria of excellence.”

Donations to the Jennifer and Dion Longworth Memorial Award fund should be sent to the Johnson County Community Foundation Longworth Fund at P.O. Box 217, Franklin, IN 46131.
